Background of the study
Work ethics, defined by a commitment to diligence, responsibility, and integrity, are essential for personal and professional success. In secondary schools in Minna LGA, Niger State, moral education is increasingly being recognized as a crucial factor in shaping students’ perspectives on work ethics. Through the incorporation of ethical principles and value-based learning, moral education aims to cultivate a strong work ethic that encourages students to develop a sense of responsibility and a commitment to excellence (Aliyu, 2023). This educational approach is particularly relevant in today’s competitive job market, where employers increasingly value not only technical skills but also ethical behavior and professionalism (Bello, 2024).

In Minna LGA, where economic development and industrial growth are on the rise, the importance of work ethics is underscored by the need to prepare a workforce that is both skilled and morally grounded. Moral education in secondary schools seeks to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, emphasizing the virtues of hard work, perseverance, and accountability (Hassan, 2023). By embedding these values within the curriculum, educators aim to foster a generation of students who are not only academically competent but also possess the moral fortitude to excel in their future careers.

Research indicates that moral education has a positive impact on students’ attitudes toward work, leading to higher levels of engagement, improved performance, and greater overall satisfaction in both academic and professional environments (Ibrahim, 2024). In addition, the study of work ethics through moral education encourages students to reflect on the social responsibilities associated with professional success and to understand the broader implications of their work on society (Jibril, 2025). As technology and globalization continue to reshape the world of work, the integration of moral education is essential in ensuring that ethical principles keep pace with rapid economic changes. This research explores how moral education influences students’ perspectives on work ethics, aiming to provide evidence-based recommendations for curriculum reforms that support holistic development and lifelong professional integrity (Kamau, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged importance of work ethics in ensuring professional success, secondary schools in Minna LGA face significant challenges in effectively instilling these values among students. The current educational system often prioritizes academic performance and technical proficiency, with insufficient emphasis on the development of ethical principles related to work (Lawal, 2023). As a result, students may graduate with strong academic credentials but lack the moral foundation necessary for responsible professional conduct. This imbalance is further exacerbated by societal pressures and modern influences that sometimes undermine traditional work values, leading to a potential disconnect between academic achievement and ethical behavior (Musa, 2024).

Educators have observed that while work ethics are discussed within the framework of moral education, the lessons are often abstract and fail to translate into practical behaviors in real-world settings. The absence of structured, experiential learning opportunities that focus on work ethics means that many students are ill-prepared to apply ethical principles in professional environments (Nwankwo, 2023). Moreover, the influence of external factors, such as media portrayals of success and the increasing prevalence of unethical practices in some industries, further complicates efforts to promote a robust work ethic among students (Olatunji, 2023).

There is a critical need to bridge this gap by systematically exploring how moral education can be harnessed to enhance students’ perspectives on work ethics. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the relationship between moral education and work ethics in secondary schools, with the objective of developing curriculum interventions that foster both academic excellence and ethical professional behavior. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers striving to prepare students for the ethical challenges of the modern workplace (Yakubu, 2024).

  3. Curriculum reforms that emphasize work ethics significantly improve students’ professional preparedness.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the crucial role of moral education in shaping work ethics among secondary school students. The findings will inform curriculum developers, educators, and policymakers about effective strategies to integrate ethical principles into educational programs. By fostering a strong work ethic, the research contributes to developing responsible professionals who are well-equipped to navigate the ethical challenges of the modern workplace. The study’s recommendations are expected to support reforms that balance academic excellence with ethical development, ultimately promoting sustainable economic and personal success.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining the influence of moral education on students’ perspectives on work ethics in secondary schools within Minna LGA, Niger State. It does not extend to other regions or educational levels, and it focuses solely on the integration of moral education with work ethics.
